I am interested in ethnobotany, ethnopharmacology, biodiversity, plant genetic resources, ethnoecology, economic botany and plant taxonomy. I have been focusing on tthree domains:

1) Ethnobotanical investigation and documentation:To investigate, document and digitize traditional botanical knowledge, through multidisciplinary approaches including ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, taxonomy, ecology, participatory rural appraisal (PRA), information and internet techniques.

2) Evaluation of traditional botanical knowledge:To evaluate traditional botanical knowledge, traditional genetic resources and ethnotaxa, through the approaches of phytochemistry, molecular biology, spectroscopy, pharmacology and metabolomics, and to explore the nature of biocultural diversity.

3)Assessment of germplasm resources and their chemical basis of ethnomedicinal plants:To probe the dynamics of formation of bioactive chemicalscaused by different environmental factors or management types.

I have received 51 research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Science & Technology ofChina, international funding agencies or some others. By the end of November 2017, 337 papers have been published, in which 136 papers were covered/indexed by SCI. I have also published 19 books, received 16 patents, and described 26 new taxa of plants. Under my supervision, 106 graduate students have obtained master or doctoral degrees. I have been awarded with 19 prizes or honors including theJ. W. Harshberger Medalawarded by the Society of Ethnobotanists, and the first grade prizes awarded by the Yunnan Provincial Government. I am now serving as an Associate Editor board member ofJournal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine, and a Board Member of several peer-review journals such asGenetic Resources and Crop Evolution,Archives of Pharmacal Research,European Journal of Medicinal Plants, andBiodiversity Sciences. I am the Vice President of Chinese Society of Ethnobotany, Board Member of International Society of Ethnobiology, and a member of various international societies including American Society of Pharmacognosy, International Society for Ethnopharmacology, and Society for Economic Botany.
